Over-the-Counter or Pharmacist? Knowing When to Ask
Pharmacists are often the most accessible healthcare professional you’ll speak with — no appointment needed. Knowing when a quick conversation is worthwhile can save you a trip elsewhere, or catch something that needs more attention.
Good reasons to ask a pharmacist first
- Mild, short-term symptoms like a cold, headache, or upset stomach
- Questions about whether two medications are safe to take together
- Help choosing between similar over-the-counter products
- Guidance on managing side effects of a new prescription
When to see a doctor instead
- Symptoms that are severe, sudden, or getting worse
- A fever that persists for more than a couple of days
- Chest pain, difficulty breathing, or signs of a serious allergic reaction — seek emergency care immediately
- Anything that needs a diagnosis or a prescription-only treatment
When in doubt, ask. A two-minute conversation at the counter — or through our prescription upload — is often the fastest way to find out which path makes sense.
